Sermon Preached 3/8/20
What are you praying for? If I were to ask you that question what are the things, people, or circumstances that are on your heart? What do you want to bring to God as a request or plea for Him to step in and intercede?
Most of us have a loved one or two who need physical healing or comfort. Many of us have relationships that are in need of repair, care, and love. Most of us want protection for loved ones and good things to happen all around us so we will pray something like, “Lord be with ___________ and with us also”.
Whether it is the biggest or smallest of things, Jesus told us to bring our requests to God in His name so that we would know that God would be working on it, for us, and ultimately for His glory.
When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray (Matthew 6:5-15) “Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…” (Matthew 6:9b.-10 NKJV; emphasis mine) He showed the heart of God that the will of God might be done on the earth as it is in heaven. I believe we would like that same thing. I hear your prayer requests and most of them are centered on God’s will being done. We would hope that His will would mean better things: peace, love, joy, and changes for the good in our circumstances.
As you know, God’s will being done on earth will not always result in sunshine and flowers and happy faces. We live in a world affected by sin. God’s plan and purposes are to work to reverse these affects. Many times we will face and feel the effects of living in our broken world like the prophet Jeremiah (Lamentations 3). But we can always remember, like Jeremiah, that every morning God’s mercies are new because of God’s great faithfulness.
As we start this new series, On Earth as it is in Heaven, from Colossians 3, consider not only your prayers but also your thinking, actions, and attitudes as answers to Jesus request for more of God’s will to be done on earth through Christ followers as it is done in heaven.
Colossians 3:1-4 gives three reason to live on earth like heaven is here and now.
Reason 1. Colossians 3:1 Christ is reigning now
Paul gives two commands for those living for heaven as heavenly citizens now.
First Seek above things (God’s will) daily (Col. 3:1)
